Handmade hair accessories – Felt lily snap clip

I bought a pack of big snap clips from the 100-yen shop, and I’ve been having lots of fun decorating them. For this lily clip you’ll need felt, a needle and thread (or hot-glue gun if you don’t want to sew), and a large snap clip (sleepie grip).

To make the lily, start by cutting two equilateral triangles from felt. Don’t worry about them being absolutely perfect in shape – real flowers aren’t completely regular!

Trim a curved triangle in the middle of each side, to make the petal shapes.

Now fold in half along a petal, and cut a slightly curved wedge from the inside of the petal. Repeat on all three sides, making sure your wedges join in the middle to form a three-pointed star.

Sew up the middles of the petals, using a whipstitch. This gives them shape.

Finally, layer the two finished triangles on top of each other and secure in the middle. Stitch in some narrow strips of yellow felt for stamens.

To make the clip base, cut two pieces of felt the same shape. They can be any shape you like, but they should be larger than the clip you are using.

Sew or glue the clip to one piece of felt.

Attach the lilies to the other piece of felt, in any way that looks pleasing to you. You could use one big flower, or a number of smaller ones.

Finally, sew or glue the two pieces of felt together. For this clip, I whipstitched the edges with embroidery thread.

enjoy your clip! I like to wear mine in the top of a braid.
